Alfama is Lisbon's oldest and most typical neighbourhood. Alfama's narrow streets go down the hillside from the castle to the river. It’s known for its Fado, a typical music of Portugal, but it’s also a great place to find small bars and restaurants of all kinds, modern or typical, casual or romantic. Most houses in Alfama are apartments in ancient buildings: some of these buildings are 200 years old! So it's quite common for appartments and studios in Alfama to be kind of small, but charming and authentic. Living in Alfama is the most typical experience possible for a student in Lisbon. The streets are just like the postcards of the city: narrow, steep and a little bit confusing. It's almost like living in a maze!
