What's life in Castelo like? It's a bit like stepping back through time to a Lisbon that's stuck somewhere between 1500 and 1924. Costa do Castelo is the top of the hill where Lisbon started, and so it's near all the other typical, postcard-perfect neighbourhoods like Alfama, Graça and Mouraria. In fact, it's very similar to Alfama, so you might not even notice one ending and the other beginning - but it's a little less touristic and more authentic. You'll live in a neighbourhood with some iconic restaurants and a dozen cool little bars. It's a great experience if you are looking for the authentic, old Lisbon. Getting around Costa do Castelo might be the tricky part. After all, you only have the trams (12E and 18E) or a bus (737). If they're not going where you're going, you have to walk.

Some younger people are being drawn to this old neighbourhood, but still: most of your neighbours will surely be older folks. A Hostel or two in the area means there's always some backpackers too.

Chapitô is hard to define or explain, but worth visiting for a dinner. It's a drama-school, working circus and a restaurant all at the same time. The restaurant is very cool.

The views of the whole city from anywhere in the neighbourhood. As it's at the top of the hill, you can see the whole of Baixa, Bairro Alto, Marquês de Pombal and beyond.

Slow and authentic. The locals here are never in a hurry and that's really the only way to live here.
